SELOUS GAME RESERVE

If you’re looking for some quiet time to yourself then Selous Game Reserve is for you. Selous Game Reserve is secluded and provided visitors an experience of undistrupted wilderness where they will get a moment to soak in the beauty of the surrounding fauna and flora.

Its biodiversity and dramatic landscapes have made Selous Game Reserve a World Heritage Site. Game reserves don’t usually offer hiking but Selous does. Outdoor aficionados are sure to have an experience of a lifetime exploring the immaculate landscapes of Tanzania as they travel on foot.

Here’s why you need to visit Selous:

It’s Massive!

The Selous Game Reserve was built in 1922 making it the first wildlife reserve in Africa. Not only is Selous the oldest reserve but it is also the largest with a size of 50,000 sq km.

Serengeti National Park and Kruger National Park may be more famous but they don’t have the size of Selous.

It’s Isolated

Because the reserve is located in such as secluded place, it doesn’t have the sort of crowd that other wildlife reserves have. With only 8% of the park being open for visitors, its wilderness really is untouched.

Get Up Close And Personal With The Wildlife

In a game reserve like Selous Park, visitors have the opportunity to get up close with animals. Unlike tourists in a national park, most tourists in Selous travel by foot; with the help of a tour guide are able to experience wildlife closely.

If you’re up for the thrill, you can walk right up to a pride of lions and see them from just a few meters away!

Explore The Biodiversity

It’s not just the animals at the Selous that will fascinate—you’ll also see plants and other ecosystems you’ve never seen in your life.

According to UNESCO, there more than 2,000 species of plants in Selous and all those plants mean that there are many more animals lurking around behind every tree.

What kind of animals can you expect to see?

We’re talking great African elephants, hippos, cheetahs, black rhinos and some of Tanzania’s last crocodiles! There’s one thing to see these animals at the zoo but it’s a completely different experience seeing them in their natural habitat!

The Tourism Board states that Tanzania offers tourists more animals per kilometer than any other African country.
