Let’s Start the Climb!

Climbing Kilimanjaro – Africa’s Highest Peak

Situated in Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro is the continent’s tallest peak at 19,340 feet (5,895 meters). It’s also the highest free-standing mountain in the world. Also known as a stratovolcano, Kilimanjaro features three cones – Kibo, Shira, and Mawenzi. Kiso is the mountain’s summit and is a dormant volcano, while the other two are extinct.

The mountain was first summited in 1889, and since then, it has become a popular hiking and trekking spot for Tanzanians and global tourists. Since climbing Kilimanjaro doesn’t require supplemental oxygen or mountaineering experience, tens of thousands of people ascend the peak each year. However, you still have to deal with altitude sickness, which is why it’s best to climb the mountain at a slow pace.

We Offer Three Routes to Summit Kilimanjaro

As a Kilimanjaro trekking company, we have chosen the three best routes to summit Kilimanjaro – Lemosho, Machame, and the Northern Circuit..

Climb Mount Kilimanjaro via

lemosho route

Lemosho begins in the west, crosses the Shira Plateau from Shira Ridge to Shira Camp, and then joins the Machame route. Since it’s a relatively new route, you can expect to encounter fewer tourists on the Lemosho track. After joining Machame, the Lemosho route follows through Lava Tower, Barafu, and Barranco. Eight to nine days is the ideal time to travel on this route. It’s a beautiful Kilimanjaro route that offers exceptional panoramic views and one of the best summit success rates.

Climb Mount Kilimanjaro via

machame route

Also known as the Whiskey route, Machame is the most popular Kilimanjaro route. It’s a steep and difficult route better suited for adventure-loving individuals with some degree of hiking experience. The route originates from the south and heads east, where it transverses underneath the mountain’s southern ice field before summiting. It’s a scenically diverse route with heavy foot traffic.

Climb Mount Kilimanjaro via

Northern Circuit Route

The Northern Circuit route is an exciting Kilimanjaro route that follows the Lemosho tour at the start and approaches the summit from the west. But this route traverses the mountain around its quiet northern poles. Even though it’s the newest route to trek Kilimanjaro, it has an impressively high success rate. It’s a nine-day climb as it requires more acclimatization, and the distance covered is more, but it offers breathtaking and diverse views and has less foot traffic.

When’s the Best Time to Hike Kilimanjaro?

The best time for climbing Kilimanjaro is during the warm and dry months of January through early March and mid-June through October. With that said, these are also the busiest months with many Kilimanjaro trekking tours as the skies are clear, the sun shines beautifully, and the mountain offers exceptional views during this time. We recommend you avoid climbing the mountain during April and November because of the rainy season, making the trails more dangerous

How Long Will It Take to Summit Kilimanjaro?

Typically, it can take between five to ten days to hike Mount Kilimanjaro, depending on the route you take and the pace of your itinerary. When you climb the mountain with us, we ensure to offer a slow pace to accommodate all climbers and ensure that all our clients are well-acclimated with the weather.

Your Kilimanjaro tour operator will take you on a 9-day tour to the top of Kilimanjaro, giving you ample time to take in the surroundings, rest in between, and have a memorable time with your loved ones. Regardless of the route you choose from the three routes mentioned above, we will make sure to provide you with a 9-day itinerary to accommodate all your needs and ensurethat no one falls sick or experiences breathing troubles in our tour group.

How to Prepare for Your Kilimanjaro Trekking Adventure

If you have decided that you want to climb Kilimanjaro, you will need to train for it beforehand as it is not easy to carry a weighted backpack and climb a mountain. You will need to build the strength to carry the weight and train to trek for long hours. Ideally, you should build up to carry double the weight you will carry on the mountain and perform endurance training.

If you have no hiking experience whatsoever, start slow and build up to hiking for 3 to 8 hours on the weekends and two hours on the weekdays. Hiking up and down a slanted surface, such as a hill, will help you train for Kilimanjaro. However, you will need to hike with your backpack as that is how you will have to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. If you do not have a hill nearby, you can use a stair master machine or an elevated treadmill to create that effect.

Remember, you are not training for a marathon. You will need to train to hike up and down a mountain with weight on your back in a low oxygen environment. Some days will be longer than others, and you might need to push yourself a little. So, train accordingly and incorporate endurance training and leg workouts in your routine instead of focusing on running.
