When’s the Best Time to Hike Kilimanjaro?

The best time for climbing Kilimanjaro is during the warm and dry months of January through early March and mid-June through October. With that said, these are also the busiest months with many Kilimanjaro trekking tours as the skies are clear, the sun shines beautifully, and the mountain offers exceptional views during this time. We recommend you avoid climbing the mountain during April and November because of the rainy season, making the trails more dangerous.

Lemosho Route

Machame Route

Also known as the Whiskey route, Machame is the most popular Kilimanjaro route. It’s a steep and difficult route better suited for adventure-loving individuals with some degree of hiking experience. The route originates from the south and heads east, where it transverses underneath the mountain’s southern ice field before summiting. It’s a scenically diverse route with heavy foot traffic.

Northern Circuit Route

The Northern Circuit route is an exciting Kilimanjaro route that follows the Lemosho tour at the start and approaches the summit from the west. How Long Will It Take to Summit Kilimanjaro?

How to Prepare for Your Kilimanjaro Trekking Adventure

If you have decided that you want to climb Kilimanjaro, you will need to train for it beforehand as it is not easy to carry a weighted backpack and climb a mountain. You will need to build the strength to carry the weight and train to trek for long hours. Ideally, you should build up to carry double the weight you will carry on the mountain and perform endurance training.

If you have no hiking experience whatsoever, start slow and build up to hiking for 3 to 8 hours on the weekends and two hours on the weekdays. Hiking up and down a slanted surface, such as a hill, will help you train for Kilimanjaro. However, you will need to hike with your backpack as that is how you will have to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. If you do not have a hill nearby, you can use a stair master machine or an elevated treadmill to create that effect.

Remember, you are not training for a marathon. You will need to train to hike up and down a mountain with weight on your back in a low oxygen environment. Some days will be longer than others, and you might need to push yourself a little. So, train accordingly and incorporate endurance training and leg workouts in your routine instead of focusing on running.
