LAKE TANGANYIKA
You may not have heard of Lake Tanganyika but it happens to be the world’s longest and Africa’s deepest freshwater lake. Spanning over 660km, Lake Tanganyika is a sight for sore eyes. The lake is said to be 9-13 million years old and is home to a thriving aquatic ecosystem consisting primarily of cichlids.
Cichlids are the pride and glory of Lake Tanganyika; they are the brightly colored fish that you find in aquariums. Aside from its sheer beauty, Lake Tanganyika is a diver’s delight. It promises unforgettable snorkeling experiences making it one of Tanzania’s most popular diving destinations.
Location
Lake Tanganyika is located on the line separating the continent’s floral eastern and western regions. Its shores are lined with oil palm and its land is perfect for growing rice and other crops.
The lake draws attention from nearby fishermen for its flourishing population of sardines and other delicious fish. But fishermen aren’t the only ones interested in the area; some of Tanzania’s fiercest crocodiles and hippos are also drawn in by the lake.
Why visit Lake Tanganyika?
Lake Tanganyika is considered the most beautiful freshwater lake in Africa. It was developed in the Great African Rift Valley with long, powdery beaches and a dramatic backdrop of dense tropical forests, laced with cascading waterfalls.
Upon visiting the lake, tourists will be welcomed by Mahale and Gombe chimpanzees, mammals of all sizes and variety of colorful birds native to Africa.
If you’re looking for an off-beat beach holiday on the continent then Lake Tanganyika is the place for you!
The lake is filled by three rivers: Malagarasi River, Kalambo River and the Ruzizi River. Millions of years ago, Malagarasi used to flow straight into the Congo River before Lake Tanganika was created.
Circling the lake are steep escarpments; some rising to heights of 2000m!
