Rwanda National Parks

Hang out with Gorillas at

Volcanoes National Park

Nestled into the far north-west corner of Rwanda, the Volcanoes National Park is one of the few habitats f mountain gorillas worldwide. It features gentle slopes and open bush that enables visitors to track and observe these animals in their natural habitat. The park has 10 habituated gorilla troops.

Moreover, the park has a diverse landscape, with five of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga Mountains massif, bamboo forests, rainforest hills, swamps, marshes, grassland, and small lakes. The versatile landscape enables the park to become home to many mammals, including bush back, spotted hyenas, and golden monkeys. The park also has prolific birdlife.

At Nakuja Expeditions, we offer guided tours to Rwanda to give you the opportunity to track golden monkeys and gorillas. Our guides are expert naturalists that know how to move in the park conscientiously to avoid impacting the lives and habitats of these animals. It’s also why the park only allows a maximum of eight tracking permits each day.

Apart from trekking and tracking the gorillas and golden monkeys, you can also visit the twin crater lakes, Ruhondo and Bulera. We can also take you on a cultural tour through the park or the Dian Fossey Hike. Moreover, one of the most special Rwanda tourism activities we offer is hiking Mount Bisoke.

It is one of the active volcanoes in the Virunga range in East Africa. At the height of 12175 ft, this mountain lies on the borders of Rwanda and DR Congo. The summit of the mountain is in Rwanda. It features two gorgeous crater lakes at the top,and Lake Ngezi found midway. Our expert mountain climbers will help you trek the mountain from the safest route, helping you explore the scenery and wildlife in the park.

Go Chimp Trekking at

Nyungwe Forest National Park

Nyungwe Forest National Park is one of the few parks in the world that houses a forest and many wonders without disrupting the natural habitat or flow of wildlife within it. Situated in Southwestern Rwanda, this park has a pre-historic aura because it’s an ancient park that dates back to even before the last Ice Age but was discovered in 2004. It happens to be the largest Afro-montane forest in Central and East Africa.

Nyungwe has the only forest canopy walkway in East Africa. It offers a unique and attractive experience and lets you view many mammals and birds. You can spot several groups of primates, such as mangabeys, chimpanzees, and the handsome Black and White Angolan colobus monkeys. This age-old park is also home to many bush pigs, golden cats, and black-fronted duikers.

It’s a haven for devoted birdwatchers as it houses around 300 bird species, including the Blue Turaco, a beautiful colored bird with a memorable call and a curved bill. Since this park is enveloped in a myriad of trees, wild orchids, and ferns, it also attracts many botanists. You can explore this verdant park by walking on the trails. With us guiding you through the park, you can discover many waterfalls, streams, and mountain summits.

The best time to visit Nyungwe is from June to mid-September, as it’s the driest season. With our experienced tour operators, you can head on a chimp trekking expedition, go on forest canopy walks, enjoy colobus trekking, and explore the hiking trails.

Explore

Akagera National Park

Akagera National Park is Central Africa’s biggest protected wetland that features relatively warm and low-lying plains. It comprises woodland, savannah, wetland, and several lakes. The largely open and expansive park is ideal for game viewing, and the park management is taking active steps to ensure the Big Five can roam freely and in greater numbers in the park with time.

Today, the park houses a family of lions from South Africa, several eastern black rhinos, baboons, giraffes, elephants, buffalos, zebras, monkeys, and more animals. It also has an impressive number of 490 bird species. You can join us on our tours to Rwanda and visit the park. We can take you on a boat ride on Lake Ihema to explore the large pods of hippos, crocodiles, and several water birds on the island in the middle of the lake.

Create Memories at

Lake Kivu

Lake Kivu is situated in Rwanda’s west and is part of Africa’s Great Rift Valley. The lake has deep emerald green waters and is surrounded by striking mountains. It has the honor of being Rwanda’s largest lake and the sixth largest lake on the continent, with a surface area of 2,700 km square. After you are exhausted from your gorilla trekking adventure at Volcanoes National Park, we can take you to Rubavu, a large town on the lake’s northern edge. It’s merely an hour’s drive from the park and is the ideal place for admiring the lake’s beauty. Its waterfront is lined with many hotels, trendy bars, and old mansions. You can get a refreshing cocktail and enjoy it by the lakeshore. We can also take you to Karongi, a beach resort with verdant hillsides covered in eucalyptus and pines that offset the sparking lake beautifully. Exploring Lake Kivu with a kayaking tour is an adventurer’s dream. You can also hike or mountain bike near the lake on the spectacular Congo Nile Trail that stretches alongside the lake.
