The Mara River is a vital border river between the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and the Maasai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya. This river hosts the largest animal migration in the wild and provides a lifetime safari experience. Witness the dramatic dwindling of floods and mud while the Nile crocodiles watch and wait. This is an experience that should not be missed.
The annual movement of wildebeest and other herbivores across the Northern Serengeti-Mara River ecosystem consists of more than 1.5 million wildebeest, 400,000 zebra, 18,000 eland, and 200,000 Thomson’s gazelle. The Migration is rarely the same in terms of precise timing and direction.
“Recommended time for this Safari”– July-August-September & October

DAY 02: ARUSHA TO TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK
Embark on a drive to Tarangire National Park after breakfast, carrying along a picnic lunch, which is located about 50km from Manyara. This park, which is Tanzania’s third largest, is renowned for its vast elephant herds. Besides the stunning baobab trees that are scattered throughout the park, Tarangire National Park is a haven for bird enthusiasts, with an estimated 550 bird species. The park’s wildlife is drawn to the Tarangire River, which is the only year-round source of water, providing a breathtaking view of diverse wildlife ranging from lions, buffaloes, zebras, and wildebeest. During the midday, our professional guide will serve lunch at a designated picnic site. In the late afternoon, we will drive to Escarpment Lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 03: MANYARA NATIONAL PARK
After your morning meal, set out for Lake Manyara National Park, which is comparatively smaller. This park is renowned for its primate-filled forests, grassy plains, and over 400 bird species. A considerable part of the park is covered by the alkaline Lake Manyara, where you can witness flocks of flamingos and other water birds. Apart from elephants, you might also catch a glimpse of giraffes, hippos, wildebeests, impalas, and a plethora of noisy monkeys and baboons in the forests close to the lake. Later in the afternoon, after an extensive game drive, you will proceed to MtowaMbu, a small multi-cultural village located on the fringes of Lake Manyara National Park. Here, you can unwind at the pool or bar, camping at a designated campsite. Dinner and overnight accommodation will be at Escarpment Lodge.
Day 04: MANYARA AREA-CENTRAL SERENGETI
Following a relaxing breakfast, we will depart for the Central Serengeti, which is one of the most affluent wildlife habitats in the park. The Mara River is a crucial water source in this area, attracting a broad range of Serengeti’s species. During the drive to the camp, we will indulge in a game drive. We will arrive in time for lunch and partake in an afternoon game drive in Serengeti National Park. Dinner and overnight accommodation will be provided at Serengeti Acacia Bills.
Day05: CENTRAL SERENGETI – NORTHERN SERENGETI
We will devote the entire day to an extensive game drive in the Northern Serengeti, with the areas we visit contingent upon the migratory herds’ location (predators typically follow the herds closely). During the brief rainy season in November and December, the herds move from the northern hills to the southern plains. During the longer rainy season from April to June, they return to the north. The yearly migration is determined by rainfall, and the herds’ location may differ from year to year, but your guide will be knowledgeable about where to find the animals and where to spot them best. In addition to wildebeests and zebras, there is also a possibility of encountering predators such as lions, leopards, and cheetahs. Dinner and overnight accommodation will be provided at Mara Mara Tented Lodge.
DAY06: NORTHERN SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK
After a relaxed breakfast, we will depart for the Central Serengeti National Park, popularly known as the Seronera area, which is one of the most abundant wildlife habitats in the park. The Seronera River is a crucial water source in this area, attracting a broad range of Serengeti’s species. During the drive to the camp, we will indulge in a game drive. We will arrive in time for lunch and proceed to enjoy an afternoon game drive in Serengeti National Park. Overnight stay will be at Mara Mara Tented Camp, with meals provided including dinner, breakfast, and lunch.
DAY 07: FULL GAME NORTHERN SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK
After breakfast, we will embark on an extensive full-day game drive in the Mara River area. The resident wildlife population in this region is exceptionally high, with prides of up to 30 lions. However, from July to October, this area transforms into a wildlife paradise. The Mara River is the main attraction, and it is not unusual to witness herds crossing the river, moving from north to south and vice versa. Please keep in mind that finding a crossing is challenging and often depends on luck. A herd may stay beside the river and decide to cross or not for several days. Overnight accommodation will be provided at Mara Mara Tented Camp, with breakfast and lunch included.
DAY08: NORTHERN SERENGETI -NGORONGORO
After a leisurely breakfast, we will depart for the Central Serengeti, one of the park’s most abundant wildlife habitats. The area features the Mara River, which provides a crucial water source that attracts a diverse range of wildlife species found throughout the Serengeti. During our journey to the camp, we will enjoy a game drive. We will arrive in time for lunch and embark on an afternoon game drive in the Serengeti National Park. We will spend the night at Ngorongoro Lodge.
DAY 09: CRATER –ARUSHA – ZANZIBAR
After breakfast, you will embark on a scenic drive and descend over 600 meters into the Ngorongoro Crater for a wildlife viewing experience. The crater is supported by a year-round water supply and fodder, which sustains a diverse array of animals, including wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog, hippo, and giant African elephants. The crater also boasts a dense population of predators, such as lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs, and the elusive leopard, which can be challenging to spot. In the late afternoon, you will return to Arusha for your evening flight to Zanzibar. Your overnight accommodation will be at Konokono Beach Resort, where you will stay in a Garden View Villa.
